What smart packaging is
Smart packaging (connected packaging) is packaging linked to digital content that the customer opens with a phone — through a QR code, NFC or augmented reality. In the AR version, a video, animation or 3D model appears on the packaging itself.
What interactive packaging can do
- Instructions — how to assemble, use or prepare the product.
- Story and origin — where the product comes from and who made it.
- A recipe or inspiration — ideas for use.
- A game or contest — engagement and a reason to come back.
- Repeat purchase — a button to the shop and a loyalty programme.
QR code, NFC or AR on packaging
| Solution | How it works | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| QR code | Opens a web page | Information, instructions, a link to the shop |
| NFC | Bringing the phone close to a tag | Premium products, authenticity |
| AR (WebAR) | Content appears on the packaging itself | Effect, emotion, brand storytelling, games |
In practice the QR code is the entry point, and AR makes the packaging come alive after scanning.
How to launch smart packaging
- Choose a goal: sales, loyalty, education, image.
- Choose a place on the packaging and design the code with an instruction.
- Produce the content: video, animation, 3D or a game.
- Test on real packaging and launch.
- Measure scans and clicks, change the content during the campaign.
